FOO FIGHTERS' CHRIS SHIFLETT: GROHL's Stint With QOTSA Was "Scary"
August 24, 2002FOO FIGHTERS guitarist Chris Shiflett has admitted that he feared the band would split following Dave Grohl's decision to drum with QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE. Talking to Rock Sound online, he said: "There was a brief period there when Dave said he was leaving and I thought, 'Are we breaking up?' Obviously Dave is the band, the FOO FIGHTERS is his band and when the guy that's the leader goes off to play in another band, well, it makes you question things. We'd just recorded a bunch of stuff — we almost had an album completed so it was a little scary. Even with reassurance it's human nature to assume the worst."
After scrapping and re-recording their original efforts in under two weeks however, Chris is confident that the FOOs will make full recovery with their fourth long-player, due at the end of October. "We re-recorded the album between Dave playing with QUEENS so it was clear pretty quickly that the FOOs were going to carry on afterwards," he reassured. "I think the whole experience motivated him to make a better record, just going out and playing with different people and having a fresh take on things. QOTSA is a very different band and I know a lot of people wanted to see Dave back behind the kit because he's a great drummer but it didn't in any way take from what we're doing. Besides, the rest of us have our side projects going on too so it was kind of a kick in the ass I realized that you've got to work on your own thing."
